Czech Republic’s tennis star
Petra Kvitova has received a
lot of praise after her compassionate response to an injury to opponent Belinda
Bencic.
The incident took place in the round of 16 clash of the Omnium
Banque National Canadian Open in Montreal on Friday.
As soon as Bencic suffered an ankle injury in the second game
of the third round, Kvitova rushed to see her opponent.
She helped her opponent walk to the chair and helped in applying
ice to her ankle.
Kvitova received a lot of appreciation for such a response
on the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter.
The 33-year-old went on to lose the match as Bencic emerged victorious
and booked her place in the quarterfinal of the event with a score of 6-7, 6-3,
6-1.
The joy of that victory was short-lived as later in the day,
Bencic suffered a defeat against Liudmila Samsonova of Russia in the last-eight
fixture with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
Despite that result, Bencic will be hoping to at least match
her best record at the upcoming US Open where she played the semifinal in 2019 and
lost to Canada’s Bianca Andreescu in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 7-5.
