Danielle Collins seemed relaxed and happy after her victory against
Maria Sakkari at the National Bank
Canadian Open (Omnium Banque Nationale) in Montreal.
World No. 48 Collins has now sealed two surprise victories at the WTA 1000 event, beginning with a win over former world No. 3 Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian player is having a successful summer after defeating world No. 1 Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon, but it was Collins who emerged victorious in Canada, 6-2, 6-2.
Following this, the American was up against eighth seed Maria Sakkari, and Collins proved herself once again with another straight-sets win, 6-4, 6-2.
Collins says she 'figured it out'
In her on-court interview after the match, Collins expressed her happiness at the outcome of the match, and seemed pretty calm as she reflected on her performance.
After being asked what was the turning point of the match, Collins joked:
"Oh. You’re asking the wrong person. I have no idea."
This funny response comes after the 29-year-old said she couldn't answer a question in her first-match interview because she had the Barbie movie soundtrack running round her head.
However, Collins went on to answer, saying:
"I think that first set after being up maybe 5-1 and then, like, her [Sakkari] coming back was difficult, you know, when someone starts to get the momentum there and I was a little nervous."
Despite her nerves, Collins went on to say that she stayed calm, which helped her to win the first set.
"Luckily I was able to stay calm and close out that set and then I just took the momentum moving forward and had to make some adjustments technically and tactically but, you know, I figured it out so that's all you can do."
Although Collins stayed calm for most of the match, there was a tense moment after Sakkari rage-hit a ball that went into the stands. This led to a brief but heated back-and-forth in which Sakkari asked what her opponent's problem was, and Collins told Sakkari to 'shut your mouth.'
