Marta Kostyuk won through against
Laura Siegemund at the
Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, but will feel aggrieved despite the win after Laura Siegemund was embroiled in a cheating storm in Stuttgart which irked the Ukrainian and tennis fans alike.
Kostyuk and Siegemund went toe to toe in a three setter in Stuttgart. The Ukrainian claimed the first set, but Siegemund levelled up in the second after a hard fought tiebreaker. Kostyuk sealed the deciding set and the win 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. But it was the third set causing all of the headlines. During the opening game, a shot from Kostyuk was called out. This gave Siegemund the early break. However Kostyuk challenged straight away. The ball was called in meaning she won the point.
However that wasn't the end of it as Siegemund argued with the umpire that she would've returned the ball if not for the out call and this was the main cause for cheating calls. The umpire in turn decided to replay the point deciding to listen to Siegemund instead of the original call. Kostyuk was unhappy with the decision and vented to the umpire that Siegemund had a fair go to return it. But the umpire instead didn't care about Kostyuk's appeal and Siegemund broke Kostyuk.
"@laurasiegemund very disappointing. Show some sportsmanship, please. Your way over 30 and not a teenager. Be a better role model," a social media user wrote. "Yup I said it during the AO that person is such a cheat and dirty player but no one believed me but yet here she is doing it again," another noted. She was well known during the Australian Open for having Coco Gauff in knots with her methodical game style which some saw as cheating.
Another wrote: "If I hv to choose my most hated player, it would be siegemund. She hv seriously no sportsmanship at all. So many times I saw her doing this."
