Badosa smiles and celebrates her first round win at 2025 French Open
Paula Badosa produced an epic victory at the Berlin Ladies Open on Wednesday downing Coco Gauff 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the Quarter-Finals and it was very much an emotional win for the Spaniard.
Badosa showed shades of her previous prime form as she overwhelmed Gauff and it overwhelmed her. Berlin also holds a bitter place in her heart.
She was due to play Wang Xinyu in the Quarter-Finals last year but had to retire due to illness and fatigue. She struggled with her health when it looked like a breakthrough was coming and one year later she was in tears as she took the adulation of the crowd.
Badosa has often been open about the fact that she will eventually have to retire due to her crippling back injury and has been nursing it for sometime. "Oh my God..." she said emotionally. "Thank you. As you can see, I'm very emotional. It's been very tough. One year ago, here, I got injured, and since then I haven't been able to play consistently. I've been through a lot professionally, but also personally.
"Seeing myself playing at this level again means so much to me. I know it's only been a couple of matches, but for me it's more about the level I played at today against Coco. She started unbelievably well, and I just kept believing. I think today I finally saw myself again on the court."

'I love this sport' - Badosa

She lauded praise on Gauff and that she was glad to create the opportunities to force herself to play her best tennis. "Honestly, she was playing incredibly well. I've played against Coco many times, so I know she has that level. But I also know that if I keep fighting, I can create opportunities for myself.
"It was really difficult. After the first set, my coach said, "I've never seen Coco play like this. Just keep believing. If you stay aggressive, you'll get your opportunity."
"That's exactly what I did. I'm especially happy with how I managed the third set because, this year, those moments haven't really gone my way. Winning a match like this in a deciding set means a lot."
But part of that in her mind was the fans as she lauded them for bringing the passion and support her direction when it looked tough on her end. "Honestly, the atmosphere I felt today on court means so much to me. Seeing the crowd and the fans was incredible. Even during the changeovers, hearing the music, competing against the best players in the world, playing at this level—the tough moments, the break points, the pressure situations—I love all of it "I love those moments. I love competing. I love this sport. That's why I keep coming back every time."
