In one of the more bizarre incidents on the WTA circuit this year, Russian tennis player
Erika Andreeva was left emotional after losing a point due to a disturbance by a bee at the ongoing
Canadian Open.
The 20-year old faced off against Canadian wildcard Marina Stakusic in the opening round in Toronto, and both players had split the first two sets. However, a controversial incident occurred during the final set, which left the Russian dynamo in tears.
Andreeva stops play to swat bee, umpire awards point to Stakusic
With Stakusic up a break in the final set and serving at 30-30, a bee or possibly fly, moved within inches of Andreeva's face. The former World No.94 attempted to swat it away, while holding up her hand to indicate she was not ready to receive the serve. Nonetheless, Stakusic, who may not have been aware of her opponent's predicament, served, causing Andreeva to slice at the ball while still distracted by the flying intruder.
Things became heated when the umpire awarded the point to Stakusic, insisting Andreeva had returned the serve. Furthermore, he claimed not to have seen Andreeva raise her hand, saying he only saw her return the ball. This led to the Russian protesting, stating she had no choice but to defend herself from the insect. Nonetheless, the umpire refused to change his mind, awarding the point to Stakusic and leaving Andreeva in tears as she walked back to the baseline. Andreeva would go on to lose the match, falling 7-6(5) 1-6 4-6 to her Canadian opponent.
