An old video involving former World No. 9
Coco Vandeweghe and recent
Roland Garros finalist
Maja Chwalinska has resurfaced on social media. The footage dates back to Wimbledon qualifying in 2022, when the two players were involved in a heated exchange after the Polish player struck Vandeweghe with a ball during a crucial stage of their match.
Back at Wimbledon 2022, Chwalinska was attempting to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Earlier in qualifying, she had defeated Aliona Bolsova and Alexandra Cadantu to reach the final qualifying round, where she faced second seed Vandeweghe for a place in the tournament proper.
The Polish player eventually came through a tight contest, recovering from a set down to secure victory and earn her maiden Grand Slam main-draw appearance. At just 20 years old, it represented one of the biggest wins of her career to that point.
However, the match was also remembered for a controversial moment late in the deciding set. With the score tied at 4-4 in the third, Vandeweghe reacted angrily after being struck directly on the body by a ball from Chwalinska during a rally.
Heated exchange captured by microphones
The American's frustration was immediately evident. As she returned to the baseline, court microphones picked up her comments directed toward the Polish player, creating a moment that would later circulate widely among tennis fans.
The exchange occurred at a critical stage of the match, with a place in the Wimbledon main draw hanging in the balance. Vandeweghe did not attempt to hide her emotions following the incident.
“That was so messed up! You pathetic person!”
Moments later, the American won the next point after an error from Chwalinska and celebrated with another remark that was clearly heard around the court.
“That’s right, karma!”
Roland Garros breakthrough brings clip back into spotlight
The video has resurfaced after Chwalinska's unexpected run to the Roland Garros final. Until a few weeks ago, the Pole was largely unknown to many casual tennis fans, but she has since produced one of the stories of the tournament after advancing all the way from qualifying.
By reaching the final in Paris, Chwalinska became only the second woman in the Open Era to make a Grand Slam final after coming through qualifying, matching the achievement of Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open.
The renewed attention has led many fans to revisit key moments from her early career, including the controversial Wimbledon qualifying clash with Vandeweghe that first drew widespread attention online.
Andreeva awaits in Paris final
Chwalinska will now attempt to secure the first title of her professional career when she faces Mirra Andreeva in Saturday's Roland Garros final. The Russian arrives as World No. 8 and arguably the favourite given her experience in the latter stages of major events.
Andreeva has already won two titles this season, triumphing in Adelaide and Linz, and has established herself among the leading players on the WTA Tour. The 19-year-old has consistently delivered strong results throughout the year.
