Coco Gauff admitted she has already received criticism online following her dramatic
Wimbledon semi-final
defeat against Karolina Muchova, but insisted the negative reactions will only motivate her to return stronger. The American revealed that some of the comments came from frustrated bettors after her narrow loss on Centre Court.
Gauff missed a match point in the deciding tie-break before Muchova completed a remarkable comeback to win 6-2, 1-6, 7-6[12-10] and reach her first
Wimbledon final. The American was left disappointed after coming within one point of victory, but she refused to let the defeat define her best-ever run at the All England Club.
The 21-year-old reached the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time in her career and will return to the top five of the WTA rankings after her strongest campaign at the tournament. However, the loss was difficult to process for a player who was hoping to reach her first final on grass.
Speaking after the match, Gauff acknowledged that dealing with defeat is always challenging for her, especially after such a close battle. “After the match, I definitely was struggling in the locker room. I don’t like losing. I think for me, the main thing I am — I’m sure my team and everyone’s going to tell me, like, you know, you did well and not be so upset — but I don’t really like losing.”
Gauff addresses online criticism after missed Wimbledon opportunity
One of the biggest talking points from the semi-final was the match point that slipped away from Gauff. At 9-8 in the final-set tie-break, the American attempted a drop shot that landed in the net, giving Muchova another chance to stay alive before eventually winning the final four points.
Gauff defended her decision after the match, explaining that the same shot could have been celebrated if it had worked. The American said that tennis is often decided by small margins and that she does not want to overanalyse a single moment.
“At the end of the day, that’s the choice I made. Was it the right one in that moment? Maybe not. But then also, if I make it, everyone’s going to say how clutch of a shot that was. I think that’s just tennis. You lose some points off margins.”
Beyond the disappointment of the defeat, Gauff also addressed the criticism she received afterwards, particularly from people who had placed bets on the match. The American said those reactions are part of the modern sports environment.
“I already got some hate comments and stuff but it’s ok. It just makes you stronger. Bettors who are mad, the usual. But whatever, I’ll come on the winning end next time, I’ll be sure to tag ’em.”
Gauff praises Muchova and looks ahead after best Wimbledon result
Despite her frustration, Gauff was clear that Muchova deserved the victory after producing a high-quality performance under pressure. The Czech saved match point and maintained her composure during one of the most dramatic moments of the tournament.
Gauff highlighted the quality of Muchova’s all-around game, particularly her ability to stay aggressive and consistent throughout the deciding moments. The American recognised that her opponent played the better match when it mattered most. “She played really well. Forehand, backhand, serve and everything was great. And the movement was very smooth.”
For Gauff, the defeat represents both a missed opportunity and an important step forward. The American admitted she still has improvements to make on grass, but she remains determined to continue competing for major titles after another deep Grand Slam run.
“I really do want to do well here. I’m not someone who wants to write myself off on grass this early in my career, but I definitely need to make some changes if I want to be successful here. And I’m trying to be positive.”
Gauff will now turn her attention towards the US Open, where she will arrive as one of the leading contenders after winning the title in New York in 2023. Despite the disappointment in London, the American believes the lessons from Wimbledon can help her continue developing as a player.
