In a recent
statement, 18-time Grand Slam champion shared her opinion about the shocking
case of an American mother who lost custody of her daughter due to differences
in perspectives on the teenager's gender identity.
In an
exclusive interview on the "Independent Women's Forum," Jeanette
Cooper, a mother residing in Chicago, recounted how her struggle to accept her
daughter's gender transition led to the loss of custody. Cooper attributed this
shift in her daughter's perception to the influence of her ex-husband's
partner.
Navratilova,
known for expressing her views on matters related to the transgender community,
revisited the story in question on Tuesday, August 22nd. The tennis player
pointed out that, from her point of view, a significant number of minors were
making hasty decisions about their gender identity.
The athlete
also highlighted the distress that many understanding parents in the United
States were experiencing due to policies and approaches surrounding gender and
sexuality. Navratilova, known for her outspokenness, has sparked debates on
these issues on several occasions.
"This
is just so wrong… trans went from 0.02% of the population to going through the
roof, statistically speaking. We are literally talking thousands of children
into thinking they are trans[gender]… and taking them away from supportive
parents- insane," former world No. 1 tweeted about it.
While Navratilova
regularly criticizes transgender activism on her social media, she has
expressed even stronger views about sports organizations, including transgender
athletes in women's competitions. Navratilova believes that including
transgender-identified athletes in women's sports is a lack of respect towards
biological women.
Martina
Navratilova boasts a remarkable tennis career with 18 Grand Slam singles titles
and 31 doubles titles. Her dominance extended across multiple decades,
achieving a record 9 Wimbledon singles championships and a total of 167 singles
titles, cementing her as one of the sport's greatest players.
