It is only June, and
Hailey Baptiste's best season to date is already over in truly heart-breaking manner. She suffered a very nasty injury while competing in her second round match at Roland Garros and will not be making a return until next year after the worst news possible emerged.
It turns out that the American had an
ACL and meniscus injury and she will soon have surgery. This was caused right at the end of the first set against qualifier Wang Xiyu. She ran to the corner of the court before landing awkwardly on her leg, tumbling to the ground in a painful picture for many spectators as she
lay there in pain.
There was soon help on the way, including her father who would be extremely worried. She eventually left the court in a wheelchair and thus began the waiting game to see the severity. The results would realise everyone's worse fears.
Injuries like this one are complicated to return from, and Baptiste will need to be patient before making her way back onto court. The return date is not set in stone but six months at least on the sidelines banishes any chances of making it back on the court this year with possibly a return Down Under depending on the recovery process.
"Still waiting to wake up from this nightmare"
Baptiste was distraught as she wrote a message on
Instagram to her fans. "The most heartbreaking end to the best season of my life. Still waiting to wake up from this nightmare. In my head, all I can think is why, why, and why. Why me? Why now? And why like this?" she began.
"It’s hard to see any purpose in something like this right now, but in my heart, I truly believe everything happens for a reason. It’s been a long and heavy couple of days filled with bad news, uncontrollable tears, and a million thoughts running through my head. This new, but somewhat familiar, challenge faces me with what will probably be one of the hardest chapters of my life, and I’m beyond ready to show how strong I really am."

The negatives were low, but it was a moment of realisation for Baptiste that she was surrounded by great people who would support her. "The reality is, things could be a lot worse, and I have the most amazing and loving people around me whenever I need them," she continued. "Through the fire, I’m still extremely blessed, and that’s what will get me through the tough days. To everyone who has messaged me, prayed for me, and sent love, thank you so much. I can’t put into words how much it means.
"Special thanks to my dad, Franklin, and Will. You guys have picked me up, held me together, and damn near wiped my ass these last couple of days. Words won’t do it justice, but I love you guys deeply."
Baptiste will conclude 2026 with an 18-13 record, something that surely would be built upon. She reached the third round at the Australian Open for the first time, losing out to Coco Gauff, before a semi-final in the Abu Dhabi Open as a wildcard got her going.
She broke new ground at the Miami Open by reaching the quarter-finals, losing to the world number one. She made the switch from hardcourt to clay effortlessly, getting her revenge against Aryna Sabalenka at the Madrid Open enroute to the semi-final, another eye-catching result. She was playing the tennis of her life and was an outside shot as going deep at Roland Garros while being seeded in a huge change of fortunes. However, she will not be able to improve on this as a long road lies ahead before we get to see the 24-year-old back on the court.
