Hailey Baptiste will miss at least half a year, it has been confirmed on the TNT Sports desk this afternoon by Jim Courier during the
French Open.
Baptiste in a video that
circled around social media fell awkwardly during her match with Xiyu Wang returning a point and was a heap on the floor. Her father tried to go down to help her and so did the umpire and her opponent but she refused to be moved amid the likely excruciating pain that she was going through.
She was eventually helped off court and couldn't put weight still on her leg and now the worst fears have been confirmed with Courier announcing on
Roland Garros TNT broadcast that her agent confirmed ACL and meniscus issues and she will soon have surgery.
This also comes as Courier said by missing six months minimum of the season, so the rest of the year, including a US homecoming, where given she was on an incredible rise, would've been the cherry on the cake, is now effectively done.
Surprise story to sideline
She has gone from being one of the real surprise stories as she reached the latter stages in a semi-final in Madrid beating the World No.1 en route as well as reaching a career high ranking of World No.25 to having to rehab an injury that was a freak sudden one at that.
She became one of many players to deal with injuries including Alexander Blockx who fell on the tarpaulin they used at the back and was seemingly asked to promptly remove it from the mentions on his Instagram post. While Jasmine Paolini played with an injury sustained in Rome and left her press conference momentarily in tears.
Freak injuries such as this to Baptiste perhaps are one and dones but with Holger Rune's for instance last year too it perhaps shines a light on the schedule players have to endure and the rise of injuries like this.
