World No.1, Iga Swiatek is through to the third round of the 2023 US Open easing past Daria Saville albeit not as simple as Rebecca Peterson but still emphatic.
Swiatek claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win and will now face Kaja Juvan in the third round at Flushing Meadows. Saville can hold her head high though after a superb battling display after a long time out with injury taking it to the defending champion at times until the end of the tie.
Both exchanged breaks to begin the opening set. But Swiatek surged ahead timely at 4-2. Saville looked to be breezing to a comfortable hold on serve, but Swiatek battled past deuce and snuck it forcing Saville to send a forehand wide.
Saville fought to try and stay with Swiatek giving it her all and was serving to level it up. But couldn't stay with the Pole as Saville's grit ran out at least in the opening set with the defending champion holding on serve to claim the first set 6-3.
Saville had the advice to take care of her serve and Swiatek broke her serve to open the second. She held to love to go 2-0 up. The Aussie broke back at 2-2 but Swiatek pounced upon a delay due to a spectator wearing a bright shirt to surge 4-2 ahead.
From 0-30 down, Saville continued not to let up and went 4-3 down. She battled to make it 5-4 and went 0-30 up on the Swiatek serve but a big serve down the middle is unreturnable and the defending champion absorbed the pressure to march on.
