Magdalena Frech stunned 4th seed
Caroline Garcia in straight sets and will meet
Olivia Gadecki in the final, after the Australian dispatched
Camila Osorio with ease. Both players are vying for their first career titles, and remarkably, it's happening at a WTA 500 event.
With the US Open behind and the Asian swing ahead, several top players withdrew in the days leading up to the tournament, including defending champion Maria Sakkari (No. 9), recent gold medalist Zheng Qinwen (No. 7), and Anna Kalinskaya (No. 14). This opened up the draw, paving the way for an unexpected final.
In the first semi-final of the day, Gadecki secured her 6th straight win, beating Colombia’s Camila Osorio. The Australian dominated the match despite the crowd's support for Osorio, who struggled to find her rhythm and committed numerous unforced errors. Gadecki sealed the win 6-2, 6-3.
Gadecki has had a breakthrough week, defeating top-tier players such as Sloane Stephens, Danielle Collins, and Martina Trevisan. The 22-year-old is set to enter the top 100 for the first time, currently ranked No. 88 in the live rankings, and could jump into the top 60 with a title win.
In the second semi-final, Garcia was the favourite against Poland’s Magdalena Frech. The Frenchwoman had played only one match previously, after advancing from the quarterfinals when Marie Bouzkova withdrew. Garcia started strong, leading 5-2 in the first set and squandering two set points on serve before Frech pushed the set to a tiebreak. Despite leading in the tiebreak, Garcia lost momentum, allowing Frech to claim the set after winning seven of the last eight points.
In the second set, Garcia again faltered under pressure, surrendering two breaks of serve. Frech, a relentless competitor, capitalized and won 7-6, 7-5 to secure her spot in the final.
Frech, who reached her second career final (the first being in Prague two months ago), is now guaranteed a spot in the top 40 for the first time, ranked No. 36 in the live rankings. A title win would push her up to No. 32.
