After suffering a disappointing loss to Emma Navarro at the 2025 China Open, Iga Swiatek revealed she was the victim of hateful comments on social media.
The World No.2 was fighting for a quarterfinal spot in Beijing, as she hoped to reclaim the title she won in 2023. Swiatek had looked unstoppable during her first two matches, recording a bagel in each encounter prior to her meeting with Navarro.
The duo had met earlier this year at the Australian Open, with Swiatek surrendering just three games to the Navarro. With Swiatek in formidable form, fans expected the Polish star to have little problem dealing with the American.
However, it was Navarro who drew first blood. The 16th seed took the first set 6-4, before Swiatek fought back to level the match. To everyone's shock, Navarro would bagel Swiatek in the final set, advancing to the quarterfinals behind a 6-4 4-6 6-0 victory.

Swiatek denounces hateful comments on social media

Following her loss, Swiatek would state her disappointment at failing to get past her inspired American opponent. Hours after her post-match conference, the reigning Wimbledon champion would take to her Instagram stories to display screenshots of the despicable comments she received soon after her loss.
"Mediocre player," read one post.
"Pathetic," read another
"No discipline, no talent, no ability to make adjustments, no mental strength," stated another user.
"You don't deserve to come to China. Go back to Poland," read yet another distasteful message.
Swiatek would bare her frustration at these comments, attributing their behavior to sports betting. Furthermore, the former World No.1 would express her disappointment at receiving these messages so close to World Mental Health Day.
"These days, it's a sad reality in the world of sport," wrote Swiatek. "Bots, betting, but also 'fans'. This is worth thinking about, especially as World Mental Health Day is fast approaching."
