American tennis star
Madison Keys was forced to dig deep to overcome 16-year old
Mirra Andreeva in the fourth round of this year's
Wimbledon, securing her first quarterfinal berth at the tournament in eight years.
Andreeva was on a Cinderella run, riding a wave of momentum as she made her way through the qualifying stages to reach the fourth round. However, her phenomenal campaign was ended by Keys, who rallied from a set down to record a 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2 victory.
Keys credits experience for comeback victory
I’m still trying to figure out how I turned that around,” Keys said in her post-match interview. “She’s obviously a phenomenal player who’s playing with no pressure and is going for everything. I had to find a way to stay in the match, keep the momentum going… and here we are.
“You don’t want to be the person who loses to her, for her to get to her first quarter-final. I knew if I could stay in the match my many – many, many – more years on Tour would kick in. I’ve fallen short of getting back in the quarter-finals a few times. It’s absolutely amazing to do it.”
The 25th seed will face World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka for a spot in the semifinals.
