Ex-coach of the former world number one Serena Williams, Rennae
Stubbs, has lambasted poor officiating in the
US Open 2024. The fourth and
final Grand Slam of the year is moving towards the business end where players
from all over the world are participating to showcase their talent and secure
the ultimate prize.
During the third round of the contest between Russia’s Anna
Kalinskaya and Brazil’s
Beatriz Haddad Maia, there a controversy regarding the
double the bounce. The incident was checked through the use of the video technology.
Interestingly, the officials ended up still making a wrong call which left quite
a lot of people in disbelief as it was clear that the ball hit twice before the
Brazilian tennis star returned it.
The incident occurred in the first set, and it did not impress Stubbs, the former coach of America’s legendary tennis star Serena Williams. She took to the social media platform X—previously known as Twitter—and expressed her displeasure about the incident.
“How the hell do you get that wrong on Armstrong WITH VAR!!!
What the hell is the umpire looking at!!!! Omggggg!!!!! Wowza! You have VAR and
u still get it wrong! I’m shook,” she wrote. In an other post, she once again
expressed her displeasure by writing: “Absolutely horrible! How do u NOT get
that right.”
Haddad Maia won the contest in straight sets
with a score of 6-3, 6-1. It is the first-time ever that the 28-year-old has
managed to book her spot in the fourth round of the US Open. She is set to face
former world number one Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki in the round of 16 on
Monday. The 34-year-old booked her place in the fourth round after beating
France’s Jessika Ponchet in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2. It will be
the first-ever meeting between the two in professional tennis.
