China’s young tennis sensation
Zheng Qinwen stunned the
world's number five Tunisia’s
Ons Jabeur to book her place in the quarterfinal of
the
US Open 2023.
The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year is moving towards
the business end where remaining players are battling it out to secure the
ultimate prize.
Qinwen secured a shocking win over last year’s runner-up
in the round of 16 tie in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4 on Monday.
The 20-year-old was extremely dominant in the first set
where she emerged victorious comfortably. While doing that, she produced 11
winners, six more than her opponent.
In the third set, Qinwen started strongly and was inching
towards a famous win after leading with a score of 5-2. However, Jabeur showed
a lot of fight and won back-to-back games to keep her hopes alive.
But that fightback was not enough as Qinwen eventually came
out on top. In the second set, the young Chinese tennis star was far more
disciplined as she committed 10 unforced errors, seven fewer than Jabeur.
She will now face the winner of the clash between Russia’s Daria
Kasatkina and the newly-crowned world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the
quarterfinal of the mega-event on Wednesday.
