The 2021 Madrid Open will be the 2nd ATP Masters 1000 event held on clay in 2021 and it will run from 2nd to 9th May.
It will the 19th ATP edition of the event that is making a return to the tennis calendar having not been held in 2020 due to the pandemic. The event is a strong one despite the absence of several notable names including de facto defending champion Novak Djokovic who won the last edition of the event in 2019. Roger Federer will also be absent so the top seed will be Rafael Nadal closely followed by Medvedev, Thiem and Tsitsipas.
Eight of the top 10 in the world will attend the event that will be held in the stunningly beautiful Caja Magica in Madrid. The top 8 seeds as always will receive a 1st round BYE but there are several sensational possible matchups in the 2nd round. Top seed Rafael Nadal will face either Mannarino or Alcaracaz in the 2nd with Jannik Sinner potentially awaiting in R3.
Daniil Medvedev will most likely get his campaign underway against clay specialist Davidovich Fokina while Dominic Thiem received a very good draw most likely facing a qualifier in R2. Red-hot Tsitsipas will play either Paire or Basilasvhili while Matteo Berrettini might have to play Fabio Fognini in R2. Alexander Zverev was not too lucky with his draw facing a possible R2 matchup vs Nishikori or Khachanov.
In terms of potential later round matchups, Nadal has Zverev, Thiem and Rublev on his side of the draw while Medvedev has Tsitsipas, Berrettini and Schwartzman. Check out the full draw below.
