A slight tennis calendar update has been announced with the 2021 Indian Wells expanded to two weeks amidst Shanghai Masters cancellation.
There won't be any tennis events in Asia this year as the final events got cancelled. The Asian swing got jeopardized a month ago when the China Open and the Japan Open got cancelled leaving the Zhuhai Championships, the Chengdu Open and Shanghai Masters as the only events remaining on the Asian swing.
Despite initial reports that the events could go ahead this year all three now got cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said:
“We’ve maintained a flexible approach to the calendar this year due to the constantly evolving nature of the pandemic."
He further added:
“It’s extremely unfortunate to announce the cancellation of our Asia swing this season and we look forward to returning in 2022.”
One event benefitted from the cancellation and it is the BNP Paris Open in Indian Wells which has now been expanded to a two-week event. It is set to take place from October 4 until October 17 and is set to return to its usual March spot on the calendar in 2022.
