Matteo Berrettini is back in the winners' circle on the main ATP Tour weeks after returning post injury with the Italian sealing Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech defeating Roberto Carballes Baena 7-5, 6-2.
It is a first title since 2022 for Berrettini who showed exactly what it meant to him post match. After much mooted injury hell, Berrettini got his confidence back at a Challenger in Arizona instead of returning straight away to the main ATP Tour and has now added an ATP 250 to the mix.
It is his first since 2022 Queens and marks an eighth career title. Four of them on clay in Gstaad, Budapest, Belgrade and now Marrakech and going into the two surfaces he thrives on the most in clay and grass, he already has a clay title again.
After a tragic injury, two years of heartbreak including withdrawing from Wimbledon 2022 as the defending runner-up due to COVID-19, it is 665 days of hurt over for the popular Italian. RCB was up a break early but rather quickly. Berrettini was able to get it back and applied pressure until he broke again. This time around, it was enough to seal the set 7-5.
The second set opened with an early break for Berrettini. He consolidated well and kept himself out of break trouble easing through the motions and not being taken the distance this time. He dropped his racquet at the end and now will head towards Monte-Carlo injury free and with a title again. Superb news for fans of the Italian.
