Despite still being World Number One, doubts still swell about
Novak Djokovic and in the case of
Jimmy Connors, he potentially sees the end incoming for him.
Djokovic has had a torrid start to the year losing in the latter stages of the Australian Open and in his only other tournament, he looked poor as he fell to World No.123 Luca Nardi. Like his loss to Sinner in Australia, it does beg the question about his future and how long he will go on for.
Knowing Djokovic, he will likely make a defiant statement of intent regardless, but Connors said that while experience can win you a lot, age is not something that can be stopped and the same can be said for players who are aiming for the scalp. In this case Luca Nardi who saw Djokovic as the ultimate scalp and achieved his goal in defeating him despite his lowly ranking before falling to Tommy Paul.
"Age is something that you can never beat and as much you try to fight it and as much as you try to figure out a way with your diet or with your training or whatever, numbers count in that," said Connors.
"When you're playing guys that are 15 years younger than you, experience is a great thing. The only thing with experience is that by the time you get it, you're too old to do anything with it. It comes to a point where these kids are just young and are willing to do and to stay."
"Djokovic, too, was the same way when he was coming up, playing the players that he had to beat to make his reputation and all that and it's tough."
