The Wimbledon 2023 concluded after a great finale on Sunday where
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz finally managed to defeat legendary Serbia’s Novak
Djokovic.
The 20-year-old emerged victorious in the grand final that
lasted for nearly five hours with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
Sports news correspondent of the iPaper James Gray stated in
a tweet that the match was witnessed by 11.3 million on BBC.
It was the highest viewing of any Wimbledon final since Andy
Murray clinched the title back in 2016 after beating Canada’s Milos Raonic with
a score of 6–4, 7–6, 7–6.
Surprisingly, the match had more viewership than the 2019 final
between Roger Federer and Djokovic which is often called one of the greatest
finals of any Grand Slam.
In that final, the Serbian tennis star came out on top in a
five-set thriller with a score of 7–6(7–5), 1–6, 7–6(7–4), 4–6, 13–12(7–3).
The victory in the match on Sunday was a special one for
Alcaraz as before this year, his best outing at Wimbledon was in 2022 where he faced
an exit in the fourth round.
On the other hand, the defeat was a heartbreaking one for
Djokovic as it ended his hope, at least for the next 12 months, of equaling
Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles.
Currently, the 36-year-old is the joint second-most
successful player in the history of the competition with seven titles to his
name.
