Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz has registered another achievement
after securing his maiden
Wimbledon title.
The 20-year-old defeated Serbia’s
Novak Djokovic in a
five-set thriller with a score of 1–6,
7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4 on Sunday to win the third Grand Slam of the year.
While doing so, Alcaraz also became the first player to book
his place in the 2023 ATP Finals, which will be played later this year.
The current world number one’s success was a special one
considering that before this year, he never played in the quarterfinals or beyond
at Wimbledon.
Other than beating Djokovic, Alcaraz also defeated the likes
of world number three Daniil Medvedev and number six Denmark’s Holger Rune on
his route to glory in London.
That victory also ended Djokovic’s special run of 34 consecutive
victories in the mega-event, which included four back-to-back major titles on
the grass court.
Before Sunday, the 36-year-old’s last defeat in the
competition came way back in the 2017 edition in the quarterfinals where he was
forced to retire with an arm injury.
The El Palmar-born will now look to defend his US Open title
later in the year. He won it last year after beating Norway’s Casper Ruud with
a score of 6–4, 2–6, 7–6(7–1), 6–3.
