On a recent episode of the
Nothing Major podcast, things got heated as the hosts, former ATP stars
Sam Querrey,
John Isner,
Steve Johnson, and
Jack Sock, dove into one of the spiciest debates in tennis: Could
Carlos Alcaraz or
Jannik Sinner beat
Rafael Nadal in his prime on clay?
The answer? Depends on which ex-professional you ask.
The discussion kicked off when Sam Querrey mentioned how
John McEnroe had recently claimed that both Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner would have beaten Rafael Nadal on clay.
Before anyone could agree or disagree, Steve Johnson jumped in and shut it down. "No. No. The guy was 100,000-2 there in his career.".
Querrey then tried to nuance it a bit. "I don’t know... I think I like Alcaraz over Rafa. I hate to say that.".
The moment those words left his mouth, Steve Johnson snapped back saying: "Oh, that’s insane.". From there, the debate heated up.
The group went full tilt, with John Isner and Jack Sock firmly backing Nadal’s supremacy, especially at
Roland Garros.
Isner acknowledged the talent of Alcaraz and Sinner but reminded everyone who the favourite is, as he said, "It’s not unfathomable to think those guys could beat Rafa on any given day, but they’re definitely not the favorites.".
Sock put it even more bluntly: "Prime Rafa? Sleeveless Rafa? He’s winning in straights against both those guys.".
Querrey, the former world no. 11 was not having any of it though retorting with: "No, get out of here dude. Rafa never played anyone who hit the ball like Carlos.".
At this point Jack Sock made the point of how they would not hit like that against prime Rafa as he elaborated by saying: "They're not hitting the ball like that against Rafa. In his prime Rafa's hitting like his heavy forehands, he's doing what Rafa does. They're not hitting the ball like that back.".
"They're playing a baseline game. They obviously all strike the ball incredible, but it's all in the slot. Rafa is doing different things, Rafa is hitting heavy forehands and grunting, they're behind the baseline and they're not rocking balls back and not doing that every point in and out.".
Overall, while some of the hosts believe Alcaraz and Sinner could challenge Rafa, none could seriously claim they would dominate him.
The Nothing Major crew might not always agree, but when it comes to Prime Nadal at Roland Garros, at least most of them know: you just do not bet against The King of Clay.
