Carlos Alcaraz had to mount a comeback against Nicolas
Jarry to secure a spot in the final of the
Rio Open.
Despite currently occupying the 139th position in the
rankings, Jarry displayed a superb level of play that kept the world No. 2 on
edge throughout the match. Nevertheless, Alcaraz ultimately prevailed over
Jarry, continuing his winning streak in South America.
Jarry entered the tournament through the Qualy and hadn’t
dropped a single set on his way to the semifinals, with impressive victories
over opponents such as Sebastian Baez, Pedro Martinez, and world No. 18 Lorenzo
Musetti.
The first set began with Jarry dominating with an
aggressive game and he took advantage of Alcaraz's doubts to get the first
break and go ahead 3-0. Just when it looked as if the Chilean would hold onto
the lead thanks to an impressive serve from him, the 19-year-old grabbed a
break at 5-3 and stayed alive until the tie-break. The former world No. 38 didn’t
lose his cool and, playing his best tennis, won the tie-break 7-6 (2).
Alcaraz improved in the second set, finding greater
ease in holding serve and putting pressure on the Chilean to try to break.
Jarry had to deal with a revitalized Alcaraz who was in excellent physical
shape and didn't give up on any point. Just when the tie-break seemed imminent,
the young star managed to get a break that gave him the 7-5 and took the match
to the deciding set
Although it seemed that the final set would be equally
contested, the Spaniard showcased his talent. An impressive passing shot
allowed the former US Open champion to secure the first break, which proved to
be the decisive moment of the match, as Jarry's confidence dropped significantly
thereafter. The world No. 2 showed no mercy and won the last 8 games in a row,
thoroughly outclassing his opponent.
With a final score of 6-7, 7-5, 6-0, the Spaniard
advanced to the final and will face Cameron Norrie, a rematch of their last week final in Argentina.
