Spain’s young tennis star
Carlos Alcaraz has stated that it
will be ‘impossible’ for him to reach the peak levels of the former world
number one
Roger Federer. The 43-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest players
in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category, having won as many as
20 Grand Slam titles in his illustrious career.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, is already amongst the best players in the world, alongside Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. The young
Spaniard has been tipped for greatness and has already won four Grand Slams despite
not even turning 22. Alcaraz recently participated in the
Laver Cup, where he played a key role in helping Team Europe regain its title after two years.
He defeated America’s Taylor Fritz in the last encounter of
the competition on Sunday with a score of 6-2, 7-5. Talking after the match, the
former world number one was asked about how many believe that he is getting
closer to matching the performances of peak Federer of 2005. However, Alcaraz
was of the opinion that it is ‘impossible’ to do that. “I’m too far away from
that level,” he said. “I hope I’ll reach it one day, but it’s really
impossible.”
Talking about winning the contest, the four-time Grand Slam
winner went on to state that he is really happy with his contribution in the mega-event.
He also stated that the members of the team feel ‘proud’ of their achievements
and believes that every player did a ‘good job’. “It’s great. We can feel
proud, all of us,” he said. “I’m really happy. All of us did a pretty good job
over the days. It’s been a top one,” the Spaniard added. We almost lost, but
Sasha (Zverev) came with some really good tennis and gave me a chance to win
the Laver Cup.”
