Alex de Minaur took on
Andy Murray in the Brit's first clay match of the year and he proved quite a bit better beating him 6-1 6-3 at the
Monte-Carlo Masters.
Murray hasn't been playing on clay for a while now with his only match recently happening last year in Madrid where he defeat Dominic Thiem no less. Playing in Madrid was a choice for Murray as it plays quite a bit faster than your average clay court and he's largely avoided slower ones by design.
His tennis simply doesn't work that well on it anymore and he proved it today. de Minaur improved on clay last year and he returned with a bang this year smashing Murray in the first set 6-1. Despite not serving that well, de Minaur frustrated Murray with his quickness around the court forcing him to overhit many balls.
It resulted in only 2 winners and 15 unforced errors for Murray in the opening set. He played better in the second one but de Minaur was still on top most of the time. Murray didn't make as many mistakes but de Minaur was also better and more aggressive having more winners than in the previous set. In the end a nice 6-3 finish in the second set.
