Alexander Zverev came back to win against
Marin Cilic as the Croatian failed to play a high-level match until the end 4-6 6-4 6-4.
Alexander Zverev arrived in Madrid after a very bad showing in Munich and the German was determined to change that in Madrid. It's been an up and down season for the German who always traditionally played well in Madrid. This match did not open well for Zverev as his opponent cleaned the lines quite often. The German opted for a more passive play and it did not work.
Cilic was in rhythm and he served rather well finishing off the opening set with 6-4. The 2nd set was played better by Zverev as he finally found a rhythm of his own and this time around the passive play worked as Cilic continued to attack but he missed more than hit. It's typical for Cilic and it was only a matter of time before it happened.
Cilic got his rhythm back against Ramos to win the decider in the last round but this time around he never quite found it. Zverev got an early break and he mainly focused on his own serve. Cilic faced little opposition on his serve for the rest of the set but the Croatian also failed to pressure his opponent too much on return and Zverev finished it off with 6-4.
