Alexander
Zverev (No. 6) secured a tremendous victory against
Alex De Minaur (No. 10) to
advance to the quarterfinals at
Indian Wells. The German deciphered De Minaur's
game as the match progressed, setting up a showdown against the world No. 2
Carlos Alcaraz.
In the
first set, Zverev displayed dominance in first-serve accuracy, boasting a 73%
success rate compared to a modest 47% from De Minaur. However, Zverev was less
efficient in return, allowing the Australian to win 70% of service points
against Zverev's 57%. After a closely contested start, De Minaur applied
pressure on the former world No. 2 in the fifth game, securing the first break
of the match after 15 points.
With the
set seemingly in De Minaur's grasp, Zverev managed to break back at the first
opportunity, leveling the score at 5-5. His joy was short-lived as he couldn't
hold his serve in the next game, ultimately conceding the set 7-5, with De
Minaur showcasing more merit than his opponent.
However, in
the second set, Zverev further reduced his first-serve percentage (35%) but
improved his effectiveness, winning 63% of those and 27% on the second serve.
This allowed the German to offer more resistance in the return game, and after
a 2-2 tie, he took control, capitalizing on his opponent's unforced errors.
Zverev won four consecutive games to secure a 6-2 set and force a decider.
In the
final phase of the match, De Minaur significantly improved his first-serve
percentage (82%), but Zverev excelled at a crucial moment in the sixth game,
taking a 4-2 lead. With no room for surprises, Zverev sealed the victory 5-7,
6-2, 6-3. In the
quarterfinals, he will face Carlos Alcaraz in a rematch of their past
Australian Open encounter, where the German secured a significant victory,
sending Carlos to the quarterfinals.
