Tennis analyst Gill Gross did a breakdown of the current landscape of the sport noting which players are trending upward and which players going the other way.
Nadal and Djokovic won 4 of the 5 last grand slams played with Alcaraz being the only other player who was able to get it done. Djokovic was not able to play at that event and one could argue that he might have won it had he been able to play. In any case, Gill considers the Serbian at the top right now arguing that it's him and Alcaraz or even Djokovic being alone in Tier 1:
“I think, there’s a tier 1. In tier 1, it’s Djokovic and Alcaraz. You could say, maybe Djokovic belongs in a tier by himself. Let’s let Alcaraz play tennis before we do that. "
When it comes to Tier 2, Gross said that it's only Tsitsipas there:
“Tsitsipas is in tier 2. I think he is alone in tier 2. Zverev isn’t there anymore, Medvedev isn’t there right now."
When it comes to Nadal Gross said he didn't know where to put Nadal so he didn't put him anywhere:
“Let me just tell you right now, I don’t know where to put Nadal. I am not including Nadal in this. He’s in a holding period for me. He doesn’t go in any tier."
Finally he broke down his Tier 3:
“Tier 3? Lots of people. I think you’ve gotta put [Casper] Ruud there. I think you gotta put Felix [Auger-Aliassime] there. I think you gotta put [Holger] Rune there. I think you gotta put [Jannik] Sinner there. Next tier - [Taylor] Fritz, [Andrey] Rublev, [Cameron] Norrie.”
