Britain’s tennis star
Andy Murray will be hoping to once
again showcase his talent in the
China Open.
The former world number one left his mark in the previous edition
of the competition which took place in 2019 but lost to Austria’s Dominic Thiem
in the quarterfinal with a score of 6-2, 7-6.
That performance was even more special considering that
Murray entered the competition outside the top 500 players in the ATP rankings.
This time around, the three-time Grand Slam winner will be
hoping to put on an even better show as he will start the competition as the world
number 41.
It will be interesting to see whether he will be able to
replicate that performance, considering how he has struggled in the recent
past.
Murray has had a disappointing campaign at the highest level
in 2023 where he participated in three out of the four Grand Slams but failed to
qualify in the fourth round or beyond in any of the mega events.
His best outing in a major event this year came in the Australian
Open where he was knocked out after losing the third-round tie to Spain’s Roberto
Bautista Agut with a score of 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Murray has struggled with fitness concerns throughout his
career and it was because of a hip injury, he ended up announcing his
retirement from the sport back in 2019.
However, the Glasgow-born made an impressive comeback after
some time and is still playing at the highest level, showing his love for the sport.
Murray has won three Grand Slam titles in his career. Two of
those victories came while playing on the home soil whereas he also clinched
the US Open title back in 2012.
His last major victory came in 2016 when he defeated Canada’s
Milos Raonic in the final of Wimbledon in straight sets with a score of 6–4,
7–6(7–3), 7–6(7–2).
