Andy Murray has revealed that he has been forced to withdraw from the 2023
Davis Cup Finals due to a shoulder injury.
The former World No. 1 was set to take part in Great Britain's attempt to win the title for the first time since 2015, along with his teammates Cameron Norrie, Jack Draper, Neal Skupski, and Joe Salisbury. They are set to begin their campaign with a quarter-final tie against Team Serbia, headed up by World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
This comes after Murray helped the team to qualify from their group stage, winning Group B in Manchester in September after taking on Australia, France, and Switzerland. However, they may find themselves in more difficulty in the Finals with two of their top players out with injury.
Murray's withdrawal follows Evans' injury
The three-time Grand Slam champion announced today, November 18, that he has been forced to pull out of the Davis Cup due to a shoulder injury: "I've picked up a minor shoulder injury which means I won't be able to take part in the Davis Cup. I'm gutted not to be part of the team but my focus is now on rehab," Murray said in a statement.
This comes as a disappointing end to a difficult season for the 36-year-old, who despite looking to be on good form, struggled to put together back-to-back wins at several points on the ATP Tour in 2023. Most recently, he suffered an extremely tight defeat to Alex de Minaur in the first round of the Paris Masters, during which Murray looked increasingly frustrated as he failed to successfully serve for the match.
Moreover, this comes as another blow to Britain's Davis Cup team after World No. 38
Dan Evans, who was integral in helping them to qualify for the Finals, also withdrew due to an ankle injury that he sustained at the Vienna Open last month. He was replaced by doubles World No. 12 Salisbury.
