Andy Murray received a wild card entry into Madrid and he delivered against a very erratic
Dominic Thiem taking him down 6-3 6-4.
Murray had not played at all this season on clay however he opted to play in Madrid because it's an atypical clay event. You can get away with much more than on usual clay and Murray was able to use that to his advantage. He served really well in this match and Thiem had trouble controlling his return in really crucial moments such as a break points and such.
He was also very erratic the entire match and slammed the ball wide in many rallies giving his opponent quite a few cheap points. His forehand never settled in the match and he committed 24 unforced errors in the match. Murray broke Thiem midway through the opening set and finished it off with 6-3. He did not allow a single break point the entire set and dropped only five points on serve.
The 2nd featured a bigger battle than the first but the crucial game came at 1-0 for Thiem. Murray faced break points and he was able to save all of them avoiding the break. After that Thiem dropped a little bit and Murray was able to find his rhythm once more. The serve was clicking and there weren't any more break points. He also broke Thiem after that game and cruised to a 6-4 finish.
A huge win for Murray who celebrated it emphatically.
