Andy Murray has played some of the best tennis he has played in years in the past month or so and while encouraging Tim Henman doesn't see it leading to any major success.
Andy Murray has been adamant about his belief in himself and reluctance to retire from the game of tennis. While it looked rather grim at the start of the year, Murray found some form over the summer and it translated towards autumn. Murray played an unbelievable match against Stefanos Tsitsipas almost beating the world number 3 at the US Open.
His level did not drop off significantly after that and he is still play some of the best tennis he has played in years. Despite all of that, Tim Henman doesn't think it's sustainable over a two week period:
“In my opinion, for him to win best of five set matches, seven times,
over a fortnight with a metal hip is a step too far. I say that also knowing that he loves to prove people wrong and I’d be delighted if he proved me wrong.”
Despite not seeing him as a major winner again Henman believes Murraycan still win on the Tour:
“Can he win on tour? Yeah I think he can. You look at
the way he has played recently and you look at the way he’s played
since Queen’s when he’s been back on the match court, I think he’s shown
a lot of improvement. He’s played some quality players –
[Stefanos] Tsitsipas in New York was an example, he’s played [Hubert]
Hurkacz twice, including in the semis in France in a tour event."
Henman finished it off by saying:
“His game is definitely trending in the right direction and if he can stay injury-free without any other niggles or setbacks, I think his game is going to get better and better.”
