Tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou has defended the Denmark’s Holger Rune after a surprising reunion.
The 20-year-old rehired Mouratoglou to replace the former world number one Germany’s Boris Becker, despite sacking him some time back from the same role.
The duo’s past relationship ended on a bad note as Rune went on to state in a Netflix documentary that Mouratoglou was lazy during his time as a head coach.
The 53-year-old, while responding to a user on a social media platform, defended Rune and stated that anyone can make a mistake. "@cappolous anyone can make a mistake. I forgive," he replied.
Earlier, Mouratoglou, in a post on the social media platform Instagram, stated that he was excited to be working with the current world number seven.
"I am excited to start a new collaboration with Holger Rune,” he wrote. “We have known each other since he was 13 years old and I always believed in his potential. He has high goals and so do I for him. It is the start of a new adventure. See you guys in Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami.”
Rune’s 2024 season did not start as he would’ve liked. He first suffered a second-round exit from the Australian Open after losing to Arthur Cazaux. He lost in the semifinal of the Open Sud de France – Montpellier as he had to retire in the second set. Rune’s and then crashed out of the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam as he lost in the second round to Alexander Shevchenko.
