Former World No.3 Dominic Thiem has had his fair share of injury woes over the past few years, and ATP colleague Nick Kyrgios recently extended his best wishes to the Austrian tennis star.
After rupturing the tendons in his right wrist at the 2021 Mallorca Championships, Thiem was forced to skip the rest of the 2021 season and the entire 2022 season. Subsequently, the 30-year old has struggled to regain his form on Tour, and is nowhere near the level that saw him lift his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2020 US Open.
The Austrian took to social media to inform his fans he had suffered the same wrist injury at a Challenger event in Hungary a few weeks ago, but thanks fans for their support and stated he would be ready to compete at the upcoming Estoril Open.
"Unfortunately, little bit before the Challenger in Hungary, the first tournament back for me, my wrist started to make some issues again," said Thiem. "I started to have those clicks again which bothered me also straight after I came back from the injury three years ago. And also this strange feeling came back and yeah it turned to pain in the last weeks and there is a minor inflammation there."
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios was quick to sympathize with his colleague, stating in a post on social media that Thiem should be proud of all his achievements and it would be "a bonus" for fans if he returned to the courts.
"Take your time @domithiem wrists are incredibly tough. You have achieved amazing things in your career and you should be proud! If you come back it’s a bonus for us all," tweeted Kyrgios.
