ATP Double Fault Leaders: Denis Shapovalov tops the list as Bublik anchors a volatile Top 5

The conclusion of the 2025 season on the ATP Tour has brought the season's statistics to light, with double faults being one of the key aspects of the game—a metric nobody wants to lead. Among the double fault leaders, one name stands out above the rest as the absolute leader: the Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
The powerful lefty leads the season's metrics by registering an average of 6.3 double faults per match, a figure that places him considerably ahead of the competition and underscores an inconsistency that weighs down his high-risk game.
Among the players with the most double faults per match are several notable names on the Tour, such as the experienced Gaël Monfils (5.6), the World No. 11 Alexander Bublik (5.2), and the former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev (4.3)—all of whom secured a spot within the top-10 in double faults.

The impact of elevated risk

Shapovalov finished a season marked by a return to the high ranks, after a couple of seasons outside the Top 50 and lacking regularity among the best. In 2025, he returned to the Top 30, yet the paradox remains that it was one of his years where the serve was frequently a problem. The double faults did not prevent him from delivering great performances, including winning the title at the Dallas Open (ATP 500) and the ATP 250 Los Cabos.
Despite his high average of double faults, Shapovalov's second-serve points won percentage remains at a decent 49.3%, suggesting that when he connects with his first serve, he is effective (72.2% of points won), but the error rate is excessively high.
Second on the list, the young Jacob Fearnley, is close behind with 6.0 DFs/match. Other high-profile and aggressive-style players are also near the top, albeit with varied results in the rest of their statistics. The veteran Gael Monfils (5.6 DFs/match) and the always unpredictable Alexander Bublik (5.2 DFs/match) round out the Top 4.
The Kazakh's case is another that draws attention, considering he is one of the best in terms of aces and first-serve points won. The 28-year-old finished the best season of his career at No. 11 with good chances of entering the Top 10 at the start of 2026. Bublik won four titles this season, reached the semifinals at the Paris Masters, and his first Grand Slam quarterfinals back at Roland Garros.

The Case of the serving specialists

It is interesting to compare this data with that of players known for their raw power. Despite their massive serves, names like Reilly Opelka (4.0 DFs/match and the Aces leader with 16.1) and the emerging Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (4.0 DFs/match and 13.5 Aces) manage to keep their double fault average at a lower limit than the leaders, demonstrating that power is not always directly linked to instability.
Furthermore, the Top 10 includes players like Daniil Medvedev (4.3 DFs/match) and the rising star Jakub Mensik (3.9 DFs/match), indicating that this struggle for service consistency is a pervasive issue on the circuit, affecting both veterans and emerging talents.
