After an impressive outing in Washington, Sebastian Korda moved into the top 20 in the ATP rankings. The official men’s tennis rankings were announced on Monday, with an update on how the players performed last week. It must be noted that the players' performances in the recently concluded Paris Olympics tennis event did not impact the updated rankings, as there were no ranking points on offer.
America’s Korda gained four spots in the updated rankings and moved into the top 20 after an impressive outing in Washington. The 24-year-old lifted the recently concluded Citi Open after beating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli with a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 on Sunday. He is the fourth American player in the top-20, along with Tommy Paul (12), Taylor Fritz (13), and Ben Shelton (14).
His opponent in the final, Cobolli, also gained massively in the latest rankings, moving to the 33rd spot after gaining 15 spots. Another American player, Frances Tiafoe, moved two spots up to the 27th spot in the rankings after a good show in Washington. His journey ended after he lost in the semifinal to Korda in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Netherland’s Tallon Griekspoor, who did not take part in the Citi Open, ended up losing 12 spots in the rankings and found himself in the 40th spot.
That was largely because in 2023, he had a fabulous outing and lost in the final to Britain’s Dan Evans. Because of that, he ended up losing 290 rating points. Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis gained 10 spots after a decent outing in Washington. He was forced to withdraw from the Citi Open in the round of 16 to Korda when the score of 5-7, 7-5, 3-2. Italy’s Jannik Sinner, who had a few tough months, still remains the world number one with 9,570 rating points. He is closely followed by Serbia’s Novak Djokovic (8,460 points) and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz (8,130) points.
