Australia did not lose any match on their road to victory in the Group D at the ongoing 2019 Davis Cup finals in Madrid.
After defeating Colombia 3-0, Australia faced Belgium in the battle for the quarterfinal spot. First player on the court was Nick Kyrgios who faced Steve Darcis. Kyrgios had a quick start into the match when he took first Darcis' service game to gain an imporatant lead in the first set. He later got one more break to win the first set 6-2.
In the second set, we did not see any breaks and marathon tie-break needed to decide the match when Kyrgios won 11-9. He said:
"We all wanted to go out there today and bring the energy. And the way Alex was playing in that first 45 minutes, it was amazing. He's playing unbelievable. I'm playing well, I'm serving well. That's usually one part of my game that is always pretty consistent.
"But I'm just happy we get through. I don't really care about my serving stats or anything. I just wanted to get the win and take a little bit of the pressure off before Alex goes out there. Hopefully we can rest up now and come back out tomorrow and do it again."
Alex De Minaur was fighting for deciding point for Australia. He was up against David Goffin and had a difficult task. But Aussie opened match in the best possible way when he won the first set 6-0. However, 2nd set lasted more than twice as long as the first. But De Minaur was still able to get the victory when he won it 7-4 in the tie-break. After the match he said:
“It’s an amazing feeling. I’ve had an unbelievable year but winning for my country is above anything I’ve been able to accomplish. So I’m super happy and I’m looking forward to hopefully be able to keep going,” said an ecstatic De Minaur.
