Greg Rusedski has praised
Novak Djokovic's performance in the final of the
Cincinnati Open, calling it the 'Best comeback ever.'
23-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic prevailed over world No. 1
Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, but his victory was no easy feat. The Serb suffered heat stroke in the opening set before losing it 5-7. Moreover, he had to fight hard to win the next two sets after both went to a tiebreak.
Eventually though, the Serb proved why he is so succesful in the sport by taking the title at the ATP Masters 1000 event 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4). At a gruelling three hours and 49 minutes, it is the longest Best of Three Masters 1000 final in history.
Rusedski praises Djokovic's comeback
Speaking after the match, Djokovic spoke of the emotional highs and lows involved in the final.
"It's tough to describe. It was the toughest I've ever played in my life. From start to finish we both went through highs, lows, incredible points, bad games, heatstroke, comebacks. Overall this was the toughest and most exciting match I've ever been a part of. It's matches like these that I continue to work for," he said.
Meanwhile, former tennis player Rusedski took to social media to share his praise of the 36-year-old.
"Best comeback ever from Novak. Didn’t see him turn this around after a set and a break down in 2nd set, suffering from heat stroke. What a champion, what a performance. How did he turn it around?" the 1997 US Open finalist wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Djokovic will now go into the upcoming Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows as the second seed. However, he has a very good chance of overtaking Alcaraz for the No. 1 spot in the ATP Rankings if he wins even one match at the major.
