Carlos
Alcaraz and
Novak Djokovic are gearing up for the final Masters 1000 event of
the year, the
Paris Masters with the young Spanish player leading the way in
performances at these tournaments in 2023.
Undoubtedly,
Alcaraz and Djokovic have been the two most consistent and successful players
of the year, particularly in the most prestigious tournaments. With all four
Grand Slam events completed and eight out of the nine Masters 1000 events
decided, it's the world No. 2, Alcaraz, who has excelled in the Masters 1000
category this year going into the Paris Masters.
At the
beginning of the year, the "sunshine double" marked the start of the
Masters events, consisting of Indian Wells and the Miami Open in March, both
spanning two weeks consecutively. 'Nole' had to skip these tournaments due to
visa issues in the USA, related to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and his
unvaccinated status. Alcaraz, on the other hand, claimed the Indian Wells title
and reached the semifinals in Miami.
In
Monte-Carlo, 'Carlitos' was sidelined due to injury, while Djokovic was
defeated by Lorenzo Musetti in the third round of the tournament. They didn't
share the draw at the Madrid Open either, as Djokovic withdrew from the
tournament, allowing Alcaraz to clinch the title for the second consecutive
year.
It wasn't
until the Rome Open that they shared the draw, and a showdown between them was
anticipated. However, both players faltered on their path: Alcaraz was upset by
Fabian Marozsan in the third round, and Djokovic was eliminated by Holger Rune
in the quarterfinals.
Following
the clay season and the Grass season, the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open
preceded the US Open. Alcaraz competed in Cincinnati and reached the
quarterfinals, while Djokovic took a break after Wimbledon.
In
Cincinnati, the world No. 1 and No. 2 treated fans to an epic final, which
Djokovic ultimately won, securing his 39th Masters 1000 title. Finally, in
Shanghai, Djokovic once again chose not to participate, and Alcaraz suffered an
early defeat in the fourth round.
The final
tally stands at 9-2 in favor of Djokovic and 25-5 for Alcaraz, with the Spanish
player holding two titles and 'Nole' one. In Paris, they will once again be in
the same draw, vying for another title to add to their collections.
