Casper Ruud celebrated victory in his opening round of the National Bank
Canadian Open in Toronto by drawing a maple leaf on the camera lens.
World No. 5 Ruud is through to the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 event after defeating Jiri Lehecka 7-6(6), 6-4. The Norwegian had a shaky start, making 21 unforced errors in the first set, but ultimately took it to a tiebreak where he came back from 0-4, before dominating the second set to win the match.
As the tournament's third seed, Ruud received a bye through the round of 64, meaning Lehecka was his first opponent at the tournament.
Ruud celebrates with maple leaf drawing
Following his victory, the 24-year-old was asked to write a message for his fans on the camera. Therefore, Ruud decided to draw a maple leaf in homage to the country in which the tournament is being played.
With a look of concentration on his face, Ruud did his best to recreate the staple of the Canadian flag. In a post that shared some photos of the drawing, The Tennis Letter praised the artwork, writing:
"Casper Ruud drew the Canadian maple leaf on the camera after his win over Jiri Lehecka.
"He must’ve practiced this because this is too good.
"Casper the tennis player… meet Casper the artist."
Ruud speaks of determination during match
Speaking in his post-match on-court interview, Ruud spoke of his determination not to give up when having difficulty during the first set.
"I just kind of said to myself, 'Don't give up.' Honestly the last couple of losses I've had in the last month have been going away from me too quickly, I've lost a couple sets 0-6, which is not a good feeling," he said.
"I'm happy with the way I progressed through the match," he added.
