Francisco Cerundolo advances to the 4th round of a grand slam for the first time in his career at it came at the 2023
Roland Garros (French Open) against Fritz 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5.
It was a very interesting match between Cerundolo and Fritz. The American won the opening set with some impressive play and a pretty erratic level from the Argentine. Cerundolo can play really well but his style of tennis also can create a lot of unforced errors when he doesn't focus as well as he can.
We saw that in the first set as he had 14 unforced errors and only six winners which wasn't very good. The second set was the polar opposite as Cerundolo exerted a lot of pressure on Fritz and the American was all over the place. He had 2 inners and 10 unforced errors which look even worse than the line Cerundolo had in the opening set.
Now the 3rd set was what could be described as the crucial one. Both were comfortable on their serves with Fritz being the first one to force a break point. He didn't use it and then faltered towards the end of the set allowing the Argentine to escape with it. Cerundolo risked a bit more towards the end and it worked out in his favour.
The final set opened with Cerundolo taking an early break and controlling the match well. It seemed like he would cruise smoothly but then Fritz broke back to make it interesting. Still, it was Cerundolo who managed the better level at the end of the set breaking Fritz once more and then closing out the match.
He once again opted to be the player who risked more and it worked out as he had almost 3 times as many winners as Fritz had. The American was simply too timid.
