If the regular ATP Tour season has been criticized for its hectic schedule, the
Challenger Tour is even longer, having just finished last Sunday with seven tournaments held during the final week across South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
There were 6,654 matches played throughout the season, where several stars found more consistency in these types of tournaments, without appearing too often in the larger events. A total of six players dominated with four titles each, including former Canadian Open champion
Borna Coric and former world No. 17 Cristian Garín.
However, the player who achieved the best overall results in Challenger tournaments was the 24-year-old American Emilio Nava, currently world No. 88. He secured four Challenger 75 titles (Asunción, Concepción, Sarasota, and Villa María), in addition to reaching the final in Tallahassee and the semi-finals in Punta del Este and Santiago, all Category 75 tournaments. The former junior No. 5 achieved a total of 44 wins in Challenger tournaments, tied with Canadian Liam Draxl, who was champion at the Winnipeg Challenger and finalist in six Challenger events.
Coric and Garín shine among veterans and young stars
Among the standouts in Challenger tournaments, one of the best was former world No. 17 Cristian Garín, who was champion of three Challenger 100 events (Mauthausen, Oeiras 5, and Montevideo) in addition to the Challenger 75 Antofagasta on home soil. He also accumulated a good amount of points in four other Challenger semi-finals. He finished the year at world No. 80, above ATP 250 champion players like Alejandro Tabilo (Chengdu) and Laslo Djere (Santiago).
Former world No. 12 Borna Coric is another stellar name on the Challenger circuit. The 29-year-old Croatian has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, making it difficult to return to the top positions in the rankings. However, he managed several good Challenger campaigns, including winning the Ch175 Aix-en-Provence, defeating Stan Wawrinka in the final. He also added three other Challenger 75 titles, allowing him to finish the year as world No. 117.
Others who secured four titles in the season include American Patrick Kypson (No. 118), Brit Jan Choinski (No. 125), and 19-year-old Norwegian Nicolai Budkov Kjaer (No. 136).
Furthermore, a total of seven players reached at least 40 wins. Nava and Draxl (both with 44 wins) are followed by Chilean Tomás Barrios with 41 wins and three titles, same numbers as Roman Burruchaga (No. 105, 3 titles). Trailing closely behind in a three-way tie with 40 wins are: Argentine Marco Trungelliti (No. 130, 3 titles), Italian Francesco Maestrelli (No. 139, 3 titles), and American Eliot Spizzirri (No. 90, 2 titles).
