America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff has revealed that the
former world number one
Venus Williams played a key role in helping her understand
a lot of things in tennis.
The 19-year-old is often regarded
as the most highly-rated player currently playing in the circuit. Gauff was
recently quoted in a report where she stated that Williams helped her
understand a lot of things including ‘humility’.
“She taught me the importance of
humility,” she said. “The importance of enjoying life outside of tennis, and
also the importance of letting your emotions out on the court.”
Gauff also recalled an incident where
she was playing with Venus in the doubles event but and ended up breaking her
racket. “And she was like, ‘That’s okay. That’s what you needed to do in that
moment,’” she said.
Gauff lived up to the hype last
year when she won her maiden title after beating the current world number two
Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the US Open with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
However, since then, the
Florida-born has struggled to get positive results. Gauff is now taking part in
the WTA 1000 event in California — the Indian Wells — where she will face France’s
Clara Burel in the round of 64 on Saturday.
