Daniil Medvedev and
Stefanos Tsitsipas set aside their conflicts and trained together in
Indian Wells. Two of the top tennis players of the last six years initiated
a fierce rivalry at the 2018
Miami Open, where the Russian secured a victory
with a scoreline of 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
During that
match, the Greek player expressed his frustration with Medvedev, hurling an
insult by saying 'bullsh*t Russian,' to which Medvedev responded by criticizing
Tsitsipas's use of toilet breaks.
"Man,
you better shut your f*ck up. Hey Stefanos, you want to look at me and talk?
you go emergency toilet for five minutes during and then you lit let and you
don't say sorry. You think you are a good kid? " Daniil Medvedev said to
Tsitsipas as he walked off the court
"He
started it. He said b*llshit Russian and you think this is normal? i answered
him because he doesn't know how to fight. he is a small kid who doesn't know
how to fight," said Medvedev to the chair umpire as he tried to intervene.
In the
post-match press conference, Tsitsipas directed his frustration towards his
opponent, stating: "It’s just boring. It’s boring. It’s so boring. It’s so
boring that I hate myself, first of all, for putting myself into that kind of
situation where I have to play in his own terms and not on my terms.
At the
moment, they have set aside their rivalry in California and have been training
together shortly before Indian Wells. Medvedev, the 4th seed, receives a bye in
the first round and awaits the winner between Flavio Cobolli and Roberto
Carballes Baena. On Tsitsipas's side, he is the 11th seed and will face the
winner of the match between Daniel Altmaier and a qualifier.
