Daniil Medvedev will finish the season inside the top-4 for the first time following another rock-solid year that saw him winning two notable ATP titles in the closing stages.
The Russian won 28 out of 38 matches in 2020, reaching the ATP Cup semi-final and advancing into the last four at the US Open. Scoring only three wins in Hamburg, Roland Garros, St. Petersburg and Vienna, Daniil found his A-game in Paris and London, winning the Paris Masters 1000 event and the ATP Finals to save the season and secure the career-best year-end position.
Medvedev scored seven top-10 triumphs in the last two events, playing on a high level and defeating Alexander Zverev and
Dominic Thiem in the title encounters. In Daniil's opinion, the season's best performance came against Thiem in that ATP Finals title match, coming from a set down to score a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 triumph and secure the crown.
"My best match of the season came against Dominic Thiem at the ATP Finals title clash. I played for one of the biggest titles of my career and delivered a great level of tennis. I couldn't play during the coronavirus outbreak between March and August, struggling to find my best level and deciding to remain on the practice court and prepare for the season restart.
I can't say anything against the
Australian Open date; the ATP, Tennis Australia and the authorities have done their best to host the event, which wasn't an easy task. I think they made the right decision. It was a strange season, and I couldn't perform at my best on clay, training on it only for a couple of days after the US Open. It's not my best surface, and I needed more time to get used to it," Daniil Medvedev said.
Medvedev should open the new season at the ATP Cup before entering the Australian Open as one of the favorites.
