Daniil Medvedev has shared his thoughts on the potential challenges of implementing a Laver Cup format at the ATP Finals.
The World No. 3 is currently competing at the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin, which he qualified for along with Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Holger Rune. Medvedev secured his place in the semi-finals after defeating Rublev and Zverev in straight sets.
The Russian player proceeded to lose his third group stage tie against Alcaraz but at this point his place in the semi-finals was safe. After the match, Medvedev was asked about his opinion on changing the ATP Finals format to resemble that of the Laver Cup. This would be done in order to keep the stakes high throughout the early stages of the tournament.

Medvedev says not all players would be happy with change

The Laver Cup is an international team tournament in which players represent either Team World or Team Europe. The event has a unique format where players who win a match on Day One earn one point, players on Day Two earn two points while on Day Three, players earn three points. The first team to get to 13 points is declared the overall winner.
"Yeah, I mean, tough to say. I would think more about something like last match at the same time. But for tournament, for tickets and stuff, not easy. Like this, they would have to have second arena. Some players would not be happy to play last match in the other arena, then come back to center. Tricky situation," said Medvedev.
Moreover, the 27-year-old added that he still had a lot to play for in his match against Alcaraz even though he knew that he had made the semi-finals: "But I think this format was here maybe since the start the same? I think it happens sometimes. But to be honest, I had a lot to play. After the match two days ago, I said, Oh good, I'm from the first place. But that was not the case. I had a lot to play," he continued.

The round-robin stage is over and we have the FOUR semifinalists of the ATP Finals. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Jannik Sinner v. Daniil Medvedev ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Carlos Alcaraz v. Novak Djokovic ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿฟ
