Jannik Sinner fought past Daniil Medvedev in a grueling semi-final battle at the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin, with the Italian player winning 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1 to make the final.
World No. 4 Sinner has managed to continue a successful run at the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, much to the delight of his home crowd. He won each of his group stage matches, moving past Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets before surviving three-set thrillers against Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune to secure his place in the semi-final.
Once there, he faced World No. 3 Medvedev for the third time in two months. Prior to this, Sinner had trailed 0-6 in their head-to-head, but he upped his game to win their last two clashes, in the final of the China Open and the Vienna Open. Moreover, his motivation to get another win and make the final of the prestigious season-ending championship in Turin was clear from the start.
Medvedev got the first break point of the match in Sinner's second service game of the opening set. However, the 22-year-old was able to hold and ended up taking the Russian's next service game to a deuce. From there, he managed to outsmart Medvedev to get the advantage and a break point of his own, which he successfully converted as his opponent's game appeared to collapse a little.
Although Medvedev tried hard to get back into the set, Sinner ultimately held him off to win the opener. However, the third seed was able to get some revenge in a tight second set. The crowd cheered on the Italian as he began to look increasingly fatigued and Medvedev took advantage of the situation.
Although Sinner was able to fend off a break point from his opponent, Medvedev soared ahead when the match went to a tiebreak, ultimately winning 7-4. However, Sinner was able to fight back in the decider, breaking Medvedev in his first service game of the set.
Sinner then built up a 4-1 lead, at which point he took Medvedev's service game to another deuce and after a long back-and-forth, he managed to secure the double break. He was then able to serve for the match, which he won with an impressive W-0 hold. The home hope will face the winner of the clash between Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the 2023 ATP Finals.
