By losing early in Cincinnati,
Rafael Nadal ensured that
Daniil Medvedev will be the top seed at this year's
US Open.
Not only that but the Russian will also retain his number one ranking ahead of Nadal for a couple of more weeks. Medvedev being the top seed at the US Open is a big deal because it's the first time that a non big four member is the top seed at a grand slam since 2004.
The last time that Federer, Nadal, Murray or Djokovic weren't a top seed heading into a grand slam was in 2004 when Andy Roddick was the top seed at that year's Australian Open. Since then the top seed has always been one of these players.
It's an incredible stat and one that only highlights their dominance over the sport of tennis. The Russian plays Taylor Fritz in the Western & Southern Open quarterfinal and with a win he would solidify himself as the number one.
