On the opening day of the Battle of the Brits at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, the top-ranked British player Daniel Evans lost to the three-time Major champion Andy Murray.
Andy prevailed 7-6, 6-4, and Evans bounced back on Monday thanks to a 7-5, 6-0 triumph over Jan Choinski in just under an hour and a half. Evans wasted a 5-3 advantage in the opener before securing it with a late break, gathering momentum and dominating set number two to secure the competition's first victory. Choinski fended off four break chances in the opening game to avoid an early setback before Evans grabbed a break in game three to open a 2-1 gap. Dropping six points in the opening four service games, Daniel forged a 5-3 advantage and earned three set points on serve at 5-4.
Ready to fight until the end, Choinski fended off those and grabbed five straight points, leveling the score at 5-5 and gathering momentum. Still, Evans started all over and caught a break at love in game 11 after Jan's backhand error, sealing the opener with a hold at 30 a couple of minutes later. Daniel was the only player on the court in set number two, securing three breaks to deliver a bagel and race over the finish time.
